What to Know Before Your First Perm Appointment

Getting a perm for the first time can feel like a big commitment, especially if you have only ever worn your hair in its natural texture. The more you know going in, the more confident you will feel about the process — and the better your results will be.

Here is everything you need to know before your first perm appointment at Aura Salon.

Start with a Consultation

Every perm at Aura Salon starts with a consultation, and if it is your first perm, this step is especially important. We will look at your hair’s current condition, talk about the type of curl or wave you want, and make sure a perm is the right choice for your hair right now.

Bring reference photos if you have them. Showing us what you want is always more effective than describing it. We will let you know what is realistic for your hair type and length, and we will be honest if a reference is not achievable.

This is also when we choose your rod size and wrapping pattern. These two decisions are what determine whether you end up with loose waves, defined curls, or something in between.

How to Prepare Your Hair

There are a few things you should do — and avoid — in the days leading up to your appointment.

Do:

  • Come with clean, product-free hair. Wash your hair the day before your appointment with a clarifying or regular shampoo. Skip conditioner, styling products, and dry shampoo.
  • Let us know about any chemical treatments you have had in the past six months — color, bleach, keratin treatments, or previous perms.

Do not:

  • Bleach or color your hair in the two weeks before your perm. The chemicals can weaken your hair and affect how the perm takes.
  • Use a deep conditioning treatment the day of. It can coat the hair and prevent the perm solution from penetrating evenly.

What Happens During the Appointment

A first perm appointment typically takes about two to two and a half hours. Here is what to expect:

Wrapping: Your hair is sectioned and wrapped around rods. The rod size and wrapping pattern are chosen based on the curl type you want. This part takes the longest — usually 30 to 45 minutes.

Processing: A perm solution is applied to the wrapped hair and left to work. Processing time varies based on your hair type and the desired result, usually 15 to 25 minutes. You will sit with the rods in during this time.

Neutralizing: A neutralizer is applied to stop the chemical process and lock in the new curl pattern. This sits for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Rinse and style: The rods are removed, your hair is rinsed thoroughly, and we style your new texture so you can see the result.

The smell of the perm solution is noticeable — there is no getting around that. It fades within a day or two.

What It Looks Like Right After

Your curls will be tighter right after the perm than they will be once they settle. This is normal. Over the first week, the curls relax and loosen into their final shape. Do not panic if you leave the salon thinking it is too curly — give it a few days.

Aftercare: The First 48 Hours

The first two days after a perm are critical. The curl bonds are still setting, and how you treat your hair during this window affects how long your perm lasts and how good it looks.

During the first 48 hours:

  • Do not wash your hair
  • Do not put your hair up in a ponytail, clip, or bun
  • Do not pin it behind your ears
  • Avoid getting it excessively wet (light rain is fine, a shower cap is your friend)
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase if you have one — it reduces friction

After 48 hours, you can wash and style normally with a few adjustments.

Ongoing Perm Care

Once your perm has set, taking care of it is straightforward:

  • Shampoo: Use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep the curl pattern intact
  • Conditioner: Use a moisturizing conditioner every wash, focusing on mid-lengths and ends
  • Styling: Scrunch a curl cream or mousse into damp hair and let it air-dry, or use a diffuser on low heat
  • Brushing: Do not brush your perm when dry — it separates the curls and creates frizz. Detangle gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb when your hair is wet and conditioned

How Long Will It Last?

A perm typically lasts three to six months, depending on your hair type, growth rate, and how you care for it. As it grows out, the new growth will be your natural texture and the permed lengths will gradually loosen. Most people either schedule a new perm or enjoy the transition.

Is a Perm Right for You?

A perm is a good option if:

  • You want more texture, volume, or curl than your natural hair provides
  • You are tired of heat-styling your hair every day to get the shape you want
  • Your hair is in good condition and has not been heavily bleached

A perm might not be the best fit right now if:

  • Your hair is heavily damaged or over-processed
  • You have had a bleach or color treatment very recently
  • You want a result that requires extremely tight or extremely loose curls that your hair cannot hold

We will go over all of this during your consultation and give you an honest recommendation.
